invite for international symposium
The legacy of Kazimierz Twardowski
Warsaw, October 24-26, 2019
Twardowski and the Lvov-Warsaw School are a phenomenon in the history of Polish philosophy as well as in the tradition of the whole analytic movement. The distinctive elements of the Lvov-Warsaw School are: purely methodological foundation, anti-irrationalist but tolerant attitude towards philosophical problems, relatively large number of women among the scientifically active members of the school and a multinational structure. Members of the Lvov-Warsaw School played a key role in the Polish philosophy of the first half of the twentieth century, and many of their methods and results (also, but not only, related to the use of logical tools in philosophy) fundamentally influenced the progress in philosophy as such. Step by step, philosophy of Twardowski and his students is getting better known but a lot remains to be done so that the role of the Lvov-Warsaw School in the history of Polish philosophy and in the analytical movement of world philosophy is adequately recognized.
The planned symposium will partially fill this gap. The symposium will be devoted to various aspects of the heritage of Kazimierz Twardowski: (1) the influence of Twardowski’s heritage on Polish and foreign philosophers; (2) original elements of Twardowski’s philosophy; (c) resonance of Twardowski’s idea in the scholarly and didactic activity of his students.
